I’m living in Amsterdam for one year now, and after a lot of shopping sessions I think I can say I already know quite some ‘shopping hotspots’. After writing a post about my favourite interior shops and a coffee & lunch guide I created a new list, including the best fashion stores in town.
It’s quite obvious that Amsterdam is a shopping valhalla. The city is flooded with retail chains like Zara, H&M, & Other Stories, Stradivarius, Forever 21, Topshop and Urban Outfitters, but the vintage lovers can also enjoy a great range of second-hand stores: go to Episode, Zipper or Jutka en Riska for the real treasures of Amsterdam. Getting original products and brands you won’t find on every corner of the street is a little hard if you don’t know where to go. My favourite stores are near many other great ones, so I hope you can get your way around the city after reading my recommendations.
Off to my favourites!
We are Labels – Utrechtsestraat 68, Herengracht 356, Huidenstraat 17, Eerste van der Helststraat 58, Raadhuisstraat 46-50
Are you a brand lover? Then you’re at the right adress at We are Labels. Here you’ll find a selection of a few well-known brands, like Cheap Monday, Anna + Nina, Levi’s and Samsøe & Samsøe, but many other brands in this store are not so popular and mainstream. My favourites? Numph, Mae Ivy and Soft Rebels.
Ivy & Liv – Elandsgracht 60, Haarlemmerstraat 92-94
This store has the most beautiful jewellery ever and although I haven’t bought a single piece here yet, it is one of my favourite shops. The jewellery is a bit more expensive than the regular retail jewelers like Six or Bijoux Brigitte, but it’s definitely worth it if you notice the quality. Choose from a wide range of small (ear)rings, bracelets and necklaces in sterling silver, gold plated and 14 carat gold, all based on the latest trends.
The Darling – Runstraat 4, Hannie Dankpaarpassage 19
This lifestyle and clothing shop is as fun as the name itself and has the finest jewellery, accessories and clothing. The collection consists of different brands, vintage pieces and customized clothing, which makes all items special and original. Besides, the store is decorated in a way that every piece is presented like a treasure. A must-go!
Subdued – Leidsestraat 73
A typical crop top teenager shop, but I prefer to come here for warm and trendy jumpers and going out tops. Plus, if you like a lace-up or cut-out top, this is one of the best stores to go. A look-a-like of Brandy Melville, but better!
Gesponnen Suiker – Jan Pieter Heijestraat 114
Everytime I think I don’t need something, I walk into Gesponnen Suiker (a.k.a. cotton candy) and in a few minutes, I already created a list of things I really have to buy. So, if you don’t want to spend a lot of money: don’t go here! For the rest of us: get your way into this fairytale store and treat yourself.
My oh My – Haarlemmerstraat 85
Absolutely my number one if it comes to Amsterdam based stores, because of the clothing and accessories, but also because of the great interior: it is as inspiring as the items itself. What you’ll find here: cosy quote sweaters, high neck tops, lace bralettes, printed retro trousers and many more!
Other stores that are worth a visit:
- Brandy Melville
- Love Stories
- Things I like, things I love
