After I wrote an Amsterdam shopping guide for interior (and a fashion version one on the way), I realized that this series is not complete without a post about the best places to have breakfast, lunch, coffee with sweets or a healthy juice. Because, what is a day shopping without beverage? Enjoy!
Le Pain Quotidien – van Leijenberghlaan 130, Beethovenstraat 56, Cornelis Troostplein 2 & 4
Le Pain is a typical French breakfast and lunch place located in many more European cities, but in Amsterdam they also have three locations, including one in my neighborhood. I love to go here for breakfast, as they serve so many great dishes. It’s always hard to make a choice. Fresh fruit bowls, waffles, scrambled eggs with salmon or yoghurt with granola: they have it all.
De Drie Graefjes – Eggertstraat 1, Rokin 128
The best place to eat cake and drink a cup of coffee. They are famous of their Red Velvet cake (which is as big as a lunch meal), but in my opinion, their cheesecake also deserves a price.
Coffee & Coconuts – Ceintuurbaan 282 – 284
This restaurant is based in an old theater, which makes the interior very original and cool. Choose between more than 10 kinds of coffee, and drink your coconut water out of a fresh coconut. But also other (healthy and not so healthy) breakfast, lunch and dinner meals are available here. For drinks, there’s a special drink menu.
Pluk Amsterdam – Reestraat 19
Pluk is located in the Nine streets and is just a few doors away from Ree 7, which is from the same owner. Grab an Acai bowl for breakfast, a muffin with a fresh pressed juice or choose from different salads and sandwiches. Another possibility: wander around and buy some of the great tableware and home accessories they’re selling.
JuiceBrothers – Raamsteeg 2, Van Woustraat 151
My favourite for on-the-go smoothies! It’s quite expensive, but every once in a while, I treat myself with a bottle. All the juices are fresh pressed with a slowjuicer, and it’s possible to choose between a juice with a lot of veggies or with a lot of fruit (you can make it as hard for yourself as you want). They even have healthy milks: almond or soy milk with, for example, cacao and hemp seed. Also good for healthy snacks!
Foodhallen (food halls)
Want to experience the typical food truck vibe? Go to the indoor foodmarket of Amsterdam and find out what is already happening on a big scale in cities like London and New York. With 20 stand holders from all around the city, there’s always something you are craving for. If you and your food partner in crime don’t have the same taste in food, just stand in line at your favourite truck and meet each other at the communal tables. Fun thing to do some time!
SLA – Middenweg 55B, Utrechtsestraat 10hs, Claude Debussylaan 35, Westerstraat 34, Ceintuurbaan 149
SLA is a phenomenon in Amsterdam, and I’m still surprised when people who don’t live in the city don’t know about this great concept. SLA is a salad bar and has 5 locations in Amsterdam. Recently, they opened their doors in Utrecht too. For about 10 euros, you can create your own salad or choose from their delicious selections. My favourite: the goat cheese salad with quinoa, pumpkin, cherry tomatoes and pumpkin seeds.
Other places that are worth a visit:
- Café Panache
- Café George
- Yoghurt Barn
